Alright, you deserve it! Here is a sneak peek of three new pieces in our Spring/Summer collection for 2012. This season, our design team was feeling bright, striking solids, matching skinny stripes, and fun tunics in your favorite, feel good Bamboo Dreams fabric. Of course, they also couldn't help themselves and got a little creative, adding some new fabrics and organic cotton voile prints - coming soon!

Ashland's 8th Annual Chocolate Festival!

I can't think of anything better than a festival dedicated to chocolate, especially in our hometown!

March 2nd to 4th marks the 8th annual Oregon Chocolate Festival, completely dedicated to over 50 Oregon chocolatiers showcasing their latest creations. This weekend long, delicious event takes place at the Ashland Springs Hotel as well as other locations throughout downtown Ashland.

"Expect the unexpected! From traditional hand rolled truffles, enrobed in the finest chocolates, to sauces, toffee, and hot chocolate. For those looking for some exciting flavors check out chocolate covered smoked bacon, spicy southern accents found in the 'Hot Mama' toffee by Melting Pot Candy, or mouth watering truffles infused with such bold flavors as espresso, lime, or lavender."

"There is something for everyone! Meet, sample & buy! - Over 50 Oregon chocolatiers and other specialty food vendors present their products and tease your palate with decadent and exciting flavors! (Saturday & Sunday 11am - 3pm at the hotel).

Chocolate - themed First Friday Art Walk organized by the Ashland Gallery Association (Friday, 5 - 8pm). Enjoy diverse forms of art, local wines and chocolates. Stop by Ashland Springs Hotel and view Kevin Shaw from Coastal Mist build his 10 tier chocolate cake, and visit with other artists and vendors showcased in the hotel lobby.

Chocolate Makers Dinner (Friday, 6:30 - 9pm) Two executive chefs, Kate Cyr and David Georgeson partnered in creating this delightful four-course dinner featuring chocolate in each dish. Dinner is accompanied by presentation from a chocolatier. (Price $59 per person inclusive.)

Just a little background…

The term “Mardi Gras” in English refers to events of carnival celebrations, the literal translation of the French words are ‘Fat Tuesday.’ Fat Tuesday refers to the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season, which begins on Ash Wednesday.

Teri Carter's EcoChic Boutique is a unique green business that offers not only environmentally friendly products but trend setters for the fashion conscious. A shop with a mission, owner Teri Carter opened the shop because of a life changing decision...

"It started with a little step... several years ago, I was amazed to find out just how much waste a family of seven could accumulate. So, along with my husband and five young children, we began recycling and quickly reduced our trash to a third of what it used to be. No longer overfilling a large curbside trash bin with non-biodegradables, we quickly moved to two recycling containers while only filling our non-recyclables bin one third full each week. This was the beginning of my obsession with all things “green”.

Over time, I became frustrated with the lack of local eco-friendly options for my family. Although I could find them online; I wanted to support my local economy.

This is where my large step came in...

I decided to bring “greener” options to our region and open a store that provided Earth Friendly Products to people who shared my passion. There was just one thing missing, a name. "Eco" was the easy part, but I didn't want to leave out the element of fashion and style. That's where the "Chic" (pronounced sheek) came in; it means just that, 'stylish' or ‘fashionable’! Perfect, I knew I had found it!"

What started with a little step became a life changing decision to run "EcoChic an Earth Friendly Boutique" Teri's previous career as a registered nurse gave her insight into the effects that chemicals found in everyday products have on our health. Yala Installs New Energy Efficient Lights

We are excited about our new energy-saving lights that were recently installed by Ashland Electric through the City of Ashland's Energy Trust. All of our old halogen warehouse lights have been replaced with new florescent lights that use 64% less energy annually!

We also installed motion detection sensors for the lights in warehouses we only occasionally visit, further decreasing our energy usage.

Can you describe your new position at Yala?
I am the Director of Sales Development at Concepts in Marketing & Sales, I will be working to grow the sales at Yala by growing key accounts.

What kind of work have you done in the past?
I was a Macy’s buyer, National Sales Manager for SDH, VP of Sales for Zoom Eyewear among others.

How did you first connect with Nancy and Larry, owners of Yala?
I met Nancy (Yala Founder) at a trade show in Las Vegas, and was immediately drawn to the clothing line. I noticed that Yala was located in Southern Oregon and I was considering moving here several years ago.

Where are you from/where do you live now?
I was born and raised in Fairfield, California. I have always lived in the greater San Francisco area. I currently live in Benicia, California …I like the small town atmosphere.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I enjoy entertaining, spending family time, traveling, wine tasting and events with my dog, Ashley. Ashley is a therapy dog and together we work with children with disabilities.

Yala Destination: Machu Picchu, Peru

Preparing for a trip - wherever you go - requires packing. Make sure you are equipped with all of the necessities to ensure your trip goes smoothly and that, most importantly, you are comfortable and confidant in the clothes you travel in...

For traveling abroad in a third world country, where you may not be able to roll a suit case from one hotel to the next, we recommend packing light. Make sure you pack things you like and wouldn't mind wearing again.

Machu Picchu

Imagine the most amazing ruins you have ever seen: 7,000 feet above sea level and nestled on a small hilltop between the Andean Mountain Range, the majestic city soars above the Urubamba Valley below. The Incan built structure has been deemed the “Lost Cities”, unknown until its relatively recent discovery in 1911.

Archaeologists theorize it was most likely a retreat for Incan rulers. Due to its isolation from the rest of Peru, living in the area full time would require traveling great distances just to reach the nearest village. This is still the case if you want to visit today, however after a lengthy plane ride, there is now a train and bus ride that will get you there a little faster!

"Separated into three areas - agricultural, urban, and religious - the structures are arranged so that the function of the buildings matches the form of their surroundings. The agricultural terracing and aqueducts take advantage of the natural slopes; the lower areas contain buildings occupied by farmers and teachers, and the most important religious areas are located at the crest of the hill, overlooking the lush Urubamba Valley thousands of feet below." - Bonnie Hamre

Hikers, tourists, and the early explorers describe similar emotions as they climb their way through the Inca Trail. Many call the experience magical. We encourage you to hike along the Inca trail, look at the Sun Temple from above, and sit for a while in the grass, just to take in the experience fully.

Meet Yala Model Tara Manning Member of The PDX 30

Starting last year, each month three new members are selected by a panel of Portland, OR leaders for standout behavior that added value to their community, boosted the economy or inspired others to do something significant in the city.

We are proud to announce a dynamic individual for this December whose significant contributions to the economy, and her community are more then note worthy, they are outstanding. Tara Manning is doing a lot for kids, the community, and business, in fact she operates three companies and operates each with style and grace.

“I love that Portland has everything a big city has, with a small town vibe. Portland is very diverse and accepting of everyone and there are always new and fun activities going on, if you want to be socially or physically active,” shared Tara with a smile. Tara Manning stays both physically and socially active running her own dance studio “Steppin’ Up” and covering a large area of the Northwest as a regional marketing manager for “360 Events and Promotions.” As if that was not enough for this dynamic lady she continues to give back to the community in meaningful and unique ways.

So how did Tara Manning arrive at this place in her life? She told us, “My parents and God made me the woman I am today. I have also had some amazing mentors that encouraged me to pursue careers that make me happy and active. My College professor encouraged me to be a dance teacher when that thought never even crossed my mind and a dear friend from San Diego encouraged and trained me to be a marketing manager. I still work in both of these fields and really appreciate their encouragement.”

When we asked if she was able to fit anything else into our busy days Tara laughed and answered, “I also work as a model with agencies in Portland, Seattle and Hawaii. I am thankful that I love what I do.”

Caring Contributor

As we mentioned early Tara is certainly not just strictly business. As so many of the members of The PDX 30, giving back is a way of life for Manning. She shared, “Serving at the union gospel for nine years was a great highlight in giving back to the community, but over the last year I found my true calling. My dog and I went through the pet therapy program to get certified as pet partners. We currently visit kids every Friday at Emanuel Children’s Hospital.” Manning clearly has a heart for kids, and relishes the chance to help young people build confidence whether she is visiting a hospital room or teaching them new dance steps at her studio.

She is also giving back to the local economy, creating jobs while developing her marketing teams. “As a marketing manager, I hire local talent to work promotional events each week. I love supplying new jobs to local talent,” shared Tara enthusiastically.

So what was the biggest hurdle this over achiever had to face? Her answer, “Perfection!” Tara explained, “I had to come to realize that everything I do will not be perfect. As long as I know I made the best decision with the information I have at the time, I trust myself that I have given the situation my all.” Manning added, “I’ve also learned that if I am myself, the things that I truly love, will come to me naturally.”

Taking New Steps

When many people are unclear what their future holds in these uncertain times Tara answered with confidence, “I plan to grow all three businesses in size and clients and get two new modeling agencies this year. 2012 is going to be even more successful than 2011.”

What would Manning share with you whether you are 8 or 80 as you pursue your goals? She said, “Listen to your inner calling. Don’t take the easy or shorter route. I know it’s cliché, but the best things in life come with patience and hard work.” With a sparkle in her eye Tara added, “Always be true to yourself!”

Yala is now on Google+! We are excited to join a new social network operated by Google, Inc., launched in June of 2011, with integrations across a number of Google products, including Buzz and Profiles. Although we are new to G+, we are learning many things that we like about the new network...

1. Photos
The photo gallery offered in your Google+ account is absolutely beautiful. Since the photo sharing site Picasa is owned by Google, they were able to integrate photo viewing, sharing and editing within your Google+ account.

The editing program in G+ makes it easy to touch up your photos:

"Google has created a section specifically for viewing, managing and editing multimedia. The photo tab takes a user to all of the photos he or she has shared, as well as the ones he or she is tagged in. It’s not just photo tagging, though: Google+ includes an image editor (complete with Instagram-like photo effects), privacy options and sharing features." - Google+

2. Post Editor
Have you ever made a post on facebook or twitter an then realized you made a mistake? Google+ allows you to edit your posts without having to delete them!

3. Circles
Organizing people or businesses that we connect with is easy with Google+'s social groups called circles. "One key element of Google+ is a focus on targeted sharing within subsets of your social group, which are what Google calls Circles. Circles are simply small groups of people that you can share to, each with names like friends, family, classmates and co-workers." - Google+

4. Hangouts
Honestly, we haven't participated in a 'hangout' yet, but see it as a useful tool in providing instant customer service or assistance in the future. “Hangouts is Google’s new group chat feature. Instead of directly asking a friend to join a group chat, users instead click “start a hangout” and they’re instantly in a video chatroom alone. At the same time, a message goes out to their social circles, letting them know that their friend is “hanging out.” Friends can then join the hangout as long as they have been placed in a circle that was invited by the person who created the Hangout." - Google+

The planning team used computer simulation models to assist in creating an efficient building envelope, setting insulation requirements for walls and ceilings, and selecting highly efficient heating/cooling equipment and lighting systems to maximize energy performance. This year we were fortunate to gather in the Crystal Room at the Ashland Springs Hotel. The chef at the hotel won the local Food and Wine competition that took place in November, and the food was AMAZING!

Yala Sales Rep Amanda Giomi Explores Europe!

Have you ever wanted to explore Europe? Been there before and dream of going back? Yala's long time employee, Amanda Giomi, got to do just that this winter when she took a well-deserved two weeks off to travel to Italy and Switzerland with her husband Treg.

What was your favorite part of the trip?
All of it really, we loved immersing ourselves in the laid back Italian lifestyle, indulging in the simple yet exquisite cuisine, and of course taking in all the history; everything from the ancient ruins in Rome to the works of famous artists such as Michael Angelo and Sandro Botticelli.

Did you know the language or learn any while you were traveling?
I had been listening to some Italian language pod casts here and there and I did know a few words and phrases but everybody was very friendly and helpful when it came to communicating, I loved learning the language! I downloaded a translation app ‘IHandy’ for my iPhone before we left and it turned out to be extremely helpful!

What historical site did you like the best?
The history and the architecture were absolutely mind-blowing! Some of the highlights for me were seeing the Coliseum, the Sistine Chapel, the Vatican, and visiting the Accademia Gallery, which houses the Statue of David.

What would you bring next time?
Better walking shoes! My typical motto is 'Fashion over Function' when it comes to footwear so I brought one pair of trendy flats (absolutely no cushion or arch support), a pair of nice boots for dressing up, and some light weight tennis shoes. I would have traded them all in for an amazing pair of walking shoes to wear every day!

What kind of accommodations did you stay in?
We mainly stayed at small Inns or B&B’s but in Venice we had an apartment, which was the best because it really allowed us to live like the locals!

What was your favorite authentic meal?
Would it be ridiculous to say that every meal was my favorite? Italians typically eat dinner later in the evening so most of the restaurants don’t even open until 8 o’clock at night. We learned quickly that 2-3 hours for meal time was the norm. At first it was a hard adjustment because we were so accustomed to living a fast-paced American lifestyle where it's always go, go, go. Once we realized "hey, we're in Italy, we have nowhere else to be and nothing else to do" dinner often became the highlight of the day. It was a time to sit down, relax, enjoy each other's company, reminisce about the days events, and indulge!

Was this your first time traveling abroad?
Yes, it was the first time for both of us! Treg and I both had dreams of going to Italy before we even met so it was amazing to be able to experience it together.

Do you have any advice for planning a trip to Europe?
The best advice I ever got was “pack light, just bring a carry-on”. Typically I over pack for every trip so I never thought it would be possible to pack two weeks worth of clothing options into a tiny carry-on, but I’m so glad that I did! We traveled through Italy & Switzerland by train and I can’t even imagine trying to deal with more than one small bag!

In hindsight I wish I had brought the Airline Comfort Set for the long plane ride to and from!

Growing bamboo improves soil quality and helps rebuild eroded soil. The extensive root system of bamboo holds soil together, prevents soil erosion and retains water in the water shed.
It does not require replanting after harvest because its vast root network continually sprouts new shoots by pulling in sunlight and converting green house gasses. This happens naturally without pesticides or fertilizers and without the use of tractors or other petroleum using machinery.

Recycled PET

Recycled PET is one of the most exciting eco-conscious fabric choices available on the market today. The fabric starts out as used plastic containers in the recycle bin. The PET products are sorted out, crushed, pressed into bales, shredded and then refined into PET flakes.
The recycled flakes are identical to newly produced PET flakes in their chemical composition, but they do have a few extremely important differences. It takes two-thirds less energy to manufacture products made out of recycled plastic, 90% less water and 50% less certain chemicals.
At first glance, making clothing out of plastic bottles instead of bamboo or organic cotton may not seem very eco-friendly, but consider this- The United States consumed over 5.6 billion pounds of PET plastic containers in 2007.
Choosing to buy garments made of recycled PET over more resource-intensive fabrics (synthetics or otherwise) is one way to help reduce this imposing mountain of plastic in our world. Flexible, weather-resistant and long lasting, PET fabrics can also be surprisingly soft and supple, while maintaining favorable insulation properties.

Yala Founders Nancy and Larry Morgan Spend Ten Days on a Barge in France!

Ten days on a barge in France is a slow, luxurious way to get to know France’s interior. It is a unique way to visit small villages, bike on country roads, shop farmers’ markets, enjoy regional wines, and eat in local restaurants.

Lucky us! We chose a trip on the River Lot. We began our planning a year ahead of time with six other friends by booking our boat through Le Boat. We already knew we would have a wonderful time as we had done the same trip on the Canal du Midi three years earlier.

The living area, bedrooms, and bathrooms are small so thank goodness we have fun and wonderful friends as travel companions. Our DreamSacks were much appreciated as the linen provided was limited.

We picked up our boat in the small town of Duelle, famous for its beautiful riverside mural depicting the history of wine.

Soon we learned the art of opening and closing the locks to raise or lower our boat as we went upstream or downstream. We all took part by either roping the boat off or climbing up the ladder and cranking the heavy iron doors open or closed as our capable friend Captain Tom, guided us through.

We flowed past spectacular views of medieval villages, castles, farms and vineyards, pulling over when we wanted to explore.

We are already looking forward to our next barge adventure.

Learning from leftovers: How wasted food affects climate change

With Thanksgiving around the corner, we thought this blog was very appropriate. Enjoy this re-blog by our friends at Bambu Batu and perhaps next time you will think twice before taking that second helping that you know you won't be able to finish...

“Finish your potatoes! There are starving children in Somalia!” . . . “Don’t throw that out! Do you know how hard I work to put food on this table?” . . . “If you let that go to waste, you’re contributing to global warming!” Global warming?

Yes, it looks as though parents have one more phrase to add to their arsenal of nit-pickings to make their kids feel just a little bit guilty about leaving that last vegetable on the plate. Turns out that letting last night’s meatloaf languish in the refrigerator may be contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. As Americans, we waste a staggering 55 million tons of food annually, which is roughly 40 percent of our total supply.

Using software developed by CleanMetrics, an analytical firm out of Oregon, the USDA discovered that food waste is responsible for 135 million tons of atmospheric CO2 each year, about 1.5 percent of total output. That comes to about 440 pounds of discarded food per individual each year, not counting meals eaten in restaurants or taking into consideration the energy and emissions produced in cooking.

The type food you waste may also have an impact on the climate. For example, meats and dairy are more energy intensive and expensive to process, transport and raise. Depending on where you live, your salad may have had to travel several hundred miles to reach the grocery store, meaning more fossil fuels burned and time spent in refrigeration. According to CleanMetrics, nearly 80 percent of all emissions are created during transportation and processing, with additional greenhouse gas being released through decomposition in landfills.

What to do... to keep the planet cool and mom and dad from nagging? Leftover plants and grains can be composted in order to let carbon return to the soil and become sequestered in the ground. Buying local groceries will help to cut down on the amount of highway your food needs to cover before becoming dinner. Eating lower down on the food chain can also reduce the amount of energy needed to create, sustain and process your meal. Most importantly, shop prudently and purchase only what you can reasonably eat within a given expiration date. Not only will you save a little bit of cash, but possibly make a dent in the fight against global warming!

Inspired, we visited a Nest sponsored workshop in Kolkata, India. Once there, we knew we wanted to help bring their beautiful crafts to a wider market.

Yala's Social Networker Takes a Trip Rafting Down the Grand Canyon

Two years ago when I was hired to work at Yala I took the job on one condition, "In 2011 I need to take a month off to go rafting down the Grand Canyon with my family," I said. Without hesitation, owners Nancy and Larry Morgan said that of course I could go. It was a good thing because my family had been on the waiting list for over 15 years!

Before I knew it, September of 2011 was here and I was headed to the Grand Canyon with 21 days worth of food, booze and clothes with five family members, one boyfriend, one high school friend, one college friend, two friends of the family and four unknown friends.

For living outside for 21 days, we had things pretty good. We were lucky enough to have the chef from Buckhorn Springs retreat center, who also happens to be my mother, plan the menu. Every day we were overwhelmed with organic vegetables, local meat, fresh eggs from Buckhorn chickens and talented chefs to put it all together. We utilized solar showers, slept on plush paco pads and enjoyed luxuries no backpacker could consider such as Ashland's own Caldera beer.

However, rafting a river that has it's own rating system is no piece of cake. Every day we packed up, lashed down and geared up for BIG water. Thanks to four skilled and experienced rower friends, our four 18-foot rafts miraculously appeared from the deadly holes of Crystal rapid and cheese grater of Lava, unharmed. Aside from my mom's knee to my face in Hermit, several uncomfortable swims and swallowed water there were no major injuries.

Every day was filled with beautiful hikes, breathtaking views and amazing waterfalls. We saw numerous big horn sheep, heard the call of the canyon wren every morning, watched crows fly away with our snacks and even saw mice and ring tailed cats attempting to board our boats at night and steal food!

With the wonderful luck of beautiful sunny weather and warm nights my most useful Yala gear was by far the silk DreamSack. It was also the most popular! Upon doing a count, there were 10 people who slept with their Yala DreamSack every night! It was way too warm to even consider zipping up your sleeping bag and the DreamSack provided the perfect light layer to take the chill off, but still keep you at a comfortable temperature. I had the Original Opening DreamSack ® which I found to be the perfect width to fit in my sleeping bag.

Since 1988, Rogue Valley Medical Center has served as the Children's Miracle Network hospital for southern Oregon and northern California.
